A grassroots initiative emerged in the park among young newcomer women in the summer of 2024, WINGS (Windsor Intercultural Neighbourhood Girls). It emerged among the group of newcomer young women who seek spaces of belonging, empowerment and opportunities to overcome the multiple barriers they have encountered upon arriving in Canada. A group of 10 girls from Syria and Afghanistan created this initiative, designed the logo, wrote the objectives and organized the first event to create a community.

WINGS was described and defined by the newcomer young women as a community of girls (14-21 years old) who seek to grow in new skills, belong to a welcoming, equitable, intercultural community and also a community that advocates for girls' rights and who become peacemakers in the neighbourhood of Downtown Windsor.

One of the members and co-founders from Afghanistan said:

“I need these spaces to be accountable, feel motivated, and overcome challenges that put my mental health at risk”.

Another member said:

"I'm not afraid of anything, I've lived through horrible situations in my homeland but now in Canada I need friends, I need a community, and I need new opportunities for this new beginning.”
